Are tripods completely necessary for photography?

I'm getting my first SLR camera in a few weeks and I'm completely new to photography. Do I HAVE to have a tripod? Like would I be able to take really clear shots without one? How about for like exposure shots? Also, are there any good sites for people new to photography to get tips and stuff? Thanks!
