Is it true that native New Yorkers generally say "tawk", "idears", "Petah" (instead of Peter), "baygs" etc?

i was born and raised in nyc. i've only heard people talk like that on tv. there are few occasions where i hear a 40+ male caucasian man speak similar to what you mentioned. usually, that guy is italian. honestly, nyc is such a large mix of natives and non-natives coming from different cultures, nationalities and accents that it doesn't have a "native" accent. that accent always seems like a stereotypical italian accent to me.
